How to Win Referrals With the Junk in Your Trunk
I get a lot of comments about the junk in my trunk.
No! Not that trunk! My car trunk (get your mind out of the gutter)!
I always kept a box of “junk” in my trunk. When I opened my trunk, people either thought I was a hoarder or I was trying to hock things out of my car. Luckily, neither were true.
I love giving gifts so I made pop by’s a staple in my real estate business. I know it sounds like a lot of work but it was actually really fun. Whenever I was near a client’s home, I would randomly leave a little treat with a note just to say I was thinking about them.
I literally doorbell ditched my clients. I would leave the car running, grab a goodie bag, and get back in the car. It was so easy.
Now multiply my enjoyment by 100. That’s how my clients felt when they came home and found a gift on their doorstep from me!
Win-win, right? Wrong.
Win-win-WIN. This little act of generosity increased my referral business exponentially! My clients loved it, they remembered me and they told their friends about how awesome I was. Honestly, it probably had less to do with the gift and more to do with the fact that it was so random and unexpected.
Once a quarter, order a bunch of small gifts and spend part of your day putting tags on them (this is a great task for an assistant to help you with). Now you’re set for the next several months.
Here are a few of the items I always had stocked in my trunk:
- Hand soap
- Ice cream scoops
- Dog treats
- Microwavable popcorn
Don’t underestimate the pop-by!
