Should I Give My Clients Referral Gifts?

A small token of appreciation is a great way to show your thanks but you shouldn’t have to pay people for their referrals. I can think of a few gifts I would give. But honestly, clients should be referring you because you provide crazy-awesome customer service and provide the absolute best service to your clients.

I built my business on referrals. I was getting 30+ referrals a month. Imagine the overhead if I gave everyone who referred me a $50 referral fee.

A simple $5 gift card and a thank you note does the trick. Automate the process so it’s the same for everyone and do it upon receiving the referral. Anyone who gives you a referral, no matter what the lead is (a million dollar buyer or someone with a sh!tty FICO score), gets a $5 gift card and a handwritten thank you note. Honestly, I’ve found that a handwritten note goes so much further than any gift card. Let’s be honest, I’m kind of obsessed with writing personal notes.

I know what you’re thinking. Five dollars doesn’t sound like a lot. It doesn’t have to be a lot. It’s about gratitude and appreciation. I’ll say it again, you don’t need to buy people’s referrals. You should be getting referrals because you provide the absolute best experience to every single person in your sphere of influence.

If the referral ends up a client, update your referrer. Let them know you are taking care of their person. Keep in touch to affirm that you are the badass Realtor that they know you to be. When the sale closes, you can always send the referrer a small gift as additional thanks but again, it doesn’t have to be over the top.

Keep it affordable, keep it consistent and keep it simple.

Do you get more referrals because you give expensive referral gifts, leave me a comment and tell me about it.
